A Sit Down with Sever of Sumo Cyco

Skye “Sever” Sweetnam

By Matt “Rabit” Martinez

If there’s one band that I would drop everything to just be a roadie for, that band would be Sumo Cyco. I first discovered this underground Canadian punk rock band in their early days, and have been a huge fan ever since, as I have written up a couple articles on them already. I was lucky enough to catch up with lead singer Skye “Sever” Sweetnam just before their performance at the Glass House in Pomona, CA. With vibrant blue hair, a voice that will grab the attention of anyone in the room, and more charisma than any stage can hold, Sever is a force to be reckoned with.

Something that Sumo Cyco is known for among their fans is their unique and very stylized music video. They used to do a series of videos with the tag line “Don’t watch this if you don’t want to throw up.” Those with an uneasy stomach, beware. Another trait Sumo Cyco is known for is creating a music video for every song they release. Their first album Lost in Cyco City is an 11 song album and they have created music videos for 8 songs so far. We do discuss the possibilities and possible options of how Sever can get her wish to do a video for every song.

Promoting their newest album Opus Mar on this tour, we talked about how the band worked towards evolving their sound and lyrics with the newest album. The running theme through the album is that of a train. So much so that their first single “Anti-Anthem” takes place in the engine car of a train. We dip into the themes of a couple different songs and where Sever’s inspirations for the songs comes from.

Getting to sit down with Sever and have a one on one conversation was a dream come true for me. Even with Army of the Universe doing their sound check throughout the interview in the background, it was fun to chat with a rock star I admire. Getting the chance to tour through America is really opening the door for this band and creating new fans at every location. To Sever and the boys, kick ass on the rest of the tour and come back to California soon.
