Album Review: Thousand Foot Krutch, Untraveled Roads (Live)

By Stephanie Stevens

Canadian band THOUSAND FOOT KRUTCH took part in the Winter Jam Tour; a 46-city annual spectacular that was the 4th largest tour so far in 2017, playing in front of almost a half million fans. Their new live album UNTRAVELED ROADS was recorded during Winter Jam. Not overproduced, just a simple yet profound look into what a TFK live show sounds like. It’s an Electrifying, energy driven and powerful set. This is the 2nd live CD this band has done  – but I think this one showcases the real and prominent elements you will get out of the band.

As I made my way through this 12-track live disc I started realizing I truly enjoy this band.  They make good, edgy music with great messages with ton of passion.

The raw, fist pumping stadium anthems are mostly singles from the band’s last three albums. LIGHT UP THE SKY shows off the energy, with a hip-hop flair. PUSH was always a favorite of with mine hints of Linkin Park influences that intertwine with that TFK melody driven ambience.  The dirty, gritty and edgier rock assault of LET THE SPARKS FLY makes your adrenaline rise halfway through the band’s set. COURTESY CALL got the crowd going and shows the versatility of singer Trevor McNevan. Out of all the songs that are memorable on this disc; the thing that stood out for me was McNevan’s positive chat with the crowd at the end of this song.  His message that our popular culture tells us that we should be a certain way – but that we don’t have to buy into that…  That God created us in his image and we are beautiful and wonderful, just as we are. That positive message really made me respect this band more and just shows that they are way more than Rockstars.  Right after that chat with the crowd they move into the ballad of BE SOMEBODY, a song that has an amazing message and is beautiful in its own right. The modern rock twist of WAR OF CHANGE made the set list, along with the band’s first single and video for UNTRAVELED ROAD. A high adrenaline, powerful message and driving intensity that shows off the talent and musicianship of this 3-man band who are known as THOUSAND FOOT KRUTCH. I can’t wait to hear new music from them soon.
