Interview with Impending Lies

By Stephanie Stevens

I fell upon IMPENDING LIES when I was searching about the band members of Chimaira and what the guys were up to, and I found out this Cleveland, Ohio based band has bassist Jim Lamarca playing bass for them and Rob Arnold (guitar player of Chimaira) had helped this band out in the studio. So, once I got this information I started to dig deeper into who IMPENDING LIES is.

First off, this band is a whole different animal then Chimaira. Combining so many elements of rock sensibilities into the band’s sound is the first thing that brings a unique and powerful feel to them. Then you have these vocal harmonies, that just enhance and provoke strong emotion and drive into the songs. Each song brings out the love and the passion they have for their craft; and with songs like the dark and hard driving melody of REVENGE to the heavy, energetic and massive punch of the song SCREAM TO WHISPER off of the bands EP THE STORM(released 2014) you can see they don’t take what they do lightly.  The guys played a lot of shows and got the band’s name out and then recorded another riveting EP in BELIEVE, and with that, a song called BELIEVE became part of the family and that song is the one that got me totally involved with this band. The songwriting, the way they put together this simple yet soaring sound of hard rock, is just refreshing in my eyes. They made more fans with the cover of Journey’s SEPARATE WAYS. Recently they just finished a new track WITHER, which is a tad heavier in music styling but still brings that melody driven sense of urgency into the song, along with those vocals that will just make you swoon. Honestly, I haven’t stopped listening to the tracks and Eps the band has sent me. The band brings to life these harmonies, that are purely smooth, appealing and powerful.

I was able to chat with Guitar/Vocals/Programmer; James Skrtich about the beginning of the band, new music and the bands influences.

HOW DID IMPENDING LIES COME TOGETHER AND WHO IS IN THE BAND CURRENTLY?

IMPENDING LIES came together in oct 2010. I (James Skrtich) started to write some demos; I did 5 songs and was talking with Jay French (Switched) about starting to track rough demos. He invited me to his place and tracked them for me. Matt Hayes heard the demo online and asked if he could throw in some vocals on a song. From there we put the band together.

Currently James Skrtich-Guitar/Vocals/Programming, Davo Billock- Guitar/Vocals/Programming, Matt Hayes- Vocals, Jim Lamarca- Bass, Roger Lewis- Drums

DOES THE BAND NAME HAVE A PERSONAL MEANING TO YOU GUYS AND HOW DOES IT INTERTWINE WITH THE MUSIC YOU MAKE?

The name stems from humanity its self and how everyone will tell you what they want you to hear. Could be real or not. You never know

HOW DOES JIM BALANCE BOTH THIS BAND AND CHIMAIRA?  HOW HAS HIS APPROACH TO BEING IN THE BAND HELPED YOUR SOUND OVERALL?

Jim joined the band Christmas 2015. The Chimaira reunion was just a thing he was talking about this time, and for right now is just a one show deal. What the future holds we don’t know when it comes to that situation. Right now, Jim has taken the rest of 2017 to prepare for the Chimaira reunion. He is going to play a song or 2 with us at the Chimaira Christmas show. So far, he has handled the situation quite well. As far as sound he has done one song with us at Spider Studios called WITHER that you can heard on Youtube. Jim has great ideas for rhythms and gels really well with Roger for the low-end section of the songs.

YOU WORK WITH ANOTHER CHIMAIRA GUY, ROB ARNOLD, IN PRODUCING YOUR MUSIC IN THE STUDIO. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE ARNOLD’S WORK ETHIC? HOW DOES THAT INTERTWINE WITH THE BANDS WORK ETHIC?

We did our BELIEVE EP at Robarnoldworld with Rob. Rob is a perfectionist and gives you 110%. He has a great ear and gives great advice but also has a great quality of listening to what you have to say also. It’s a great give and take when coming to writing/tracking at his studio.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE MUSIC YOU GUYS COME UP WITH?

We never know how to answer this question. Some songs are heavy some songs just aren’t. Are we metal or are we rock/ hard rock? We just go with the mood of the song we start. The beauty of IMPENDING LIES is there really are no boundaries to how a song can go. We love that aspect and never want to lose that.

WHAT DO YOU FEEL HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST GROWTH AS A MUSICIAN AND BAND, SINCE YOUR FORMATION IN YOUR SONGWRITING?

The song writing has definitely progressed and improved.  Much more dimension in the songs than from the first EP.

WHO DO YOU GUYS LOOK UP TO AS FAR AS  BANDS AND WHAT MAKES THOSE BANDS IDOLS IN YOUR EYES?

Sevendust, Breaking Benjamin, Kiss, Machine Head, Alice in Chains, Korn and so much more.

WITHER LOOKS LIKE THE NEWEST MUSIC YOU PUT OUT, IS THIS JUST THE PLATFORM TO A NEW ALBUM IN THE WORKS, AND IF SO WHEN WILL IT BE OUT ?  CAN YOU GIVE US ANY DETAILS ON WHAT TO EXPECT FROM IT?

WITHER will be on a new EP that we are going to start writing very soon.  Hopefully releasing a new EP in 2018!

YOU COVERED A JOURNEY SONG, WHICH IS PRETTY BALLSY, SINCE JOURNEY IS PRETTY BAD ASS. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE SONG YOU DID AND HOW WAS THE FEEDBACK FROM FANS ON YOUR CHOICE?

Davo started the process of covering SEPARATE WAYS for almost a year before he told us what he was working on. Since we started playing it in 2013 it has become a crowd favorite. It’s a fun song to play and it’s fun to watch the crowd react to it. Everyone knows Journey right?

“BELIEVE” IS A FAVORITE OF MINE. I LOVE THE HARMONIES. HOW DID THAT SONG COME TO BE AND OVER ALL HOW DOES THE BAND GO INTO SONGWRITING?

When we start new songs, we use our home studios to lay ideas. BELIEVE was a track that had a lot of it finished at Robarnoldworld.

LOOKED FOR YOUR MUSIC ON SPOTIFY AND DIDN’T FIND ANYTHING. HOW CAN PEOPLE GET YOUR MUSIC IF THEY ARE INTERESTED? ANY REASON WHY A MEDIA OUTLET LIKE SPOTIFY YOUR NOT ON?

We are working on getting everything back up on all of the sites. It’s a slow process.

YOU GUYS HAVE A SOUND THAT I FEEL A LABEL SHOULD BE ALL OVER. HAVE YOU GUYS HAD ANY LUCK WITH THAT SIDE OF THE BUSINESS? OR DO YOU FEEL, IN THIS DAY AND AGE, YOU CAN DO IT DIY?

There are a lot of bands out there doing exactly what we are doing. DIY is possible but honestly being in a band is a struggle. The labels aren’t the way they were 20 years ago. It’s hard to make a living in this biz. We do it for the love of playing and at our own pace.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE TOP THREE IMPORTANT ELEMENTS TO HAVE IN A LIVE SHOW?

Energy, conviction, being prepared

WHO HAS BEEN THE BEST BAND YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH THUS FAR IN YOUR CAREER?

That’s a hard question. All of these bands IMPENDING LIES have shared the stage with and all were professional and amazing.  HELLYEAH, Demon Hunter, Flaw, Filter, Orgy, POD, Red, Gemini Syndrome, Nonpoint, Lacuna Coil, Epica, Shinedown, Thousand Foot Krutch and so many more.

DO YOU GUYS TOUR A LOT? IF SO ANYTHING IN THE NEAR FUTURE?

No, we don’t. We have been as far as Dallas but life takes over. Jobs, family and so many other factors. We stay regional now. We stay regional to keep the name going and because we do enjoy playing music so much.

ONE FUN FACT ABOUT EACH OF YOUR BAND MEMBERS THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT THEM.

Matt loves B rated Horror films, Lamarca has a pretty large KISS collection, Roger has a music degree from YSU, James has an obsession with Batman, Davo used to run a dog rescue with his mom.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PAST TIME OTHER THEN MUSIC?

Can’t really answer this.. it’s all we have done for 15yrs plus

WHERE CAN FANS KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOU GUYS AND ANYTHING YOU WANT TO LET YOUR FANS KNOW THAT WE DIDN’T COVER IN THIS CHAT?
