B-Mac Chat with Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein

By Brandon “B-Mac” McCarthy

Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein has got to be one of the buffest musicians I have ever witnessed. The man in 53 years old and has the physique of a Mr. Olympia contestant. I wondered what his secret was, besides hitting the gym and a healthy diet. Well, when Matt and I went to see Doyle perform at the Whisky, I got the chance to get an answer to that question.  I had the opportunity to speak with Doyle himself. I admit, I did feel a little intimidated by his size, but as it turns out, he happens to be one of the nicest guys a person would want to meet.

When I introduced, I accidentally mixed up where “von” goes in his name. Luckily for me, he was a good sport about and did not seem to mind. From what I have learned from him, his healthy lifestyle and muscles are due in part to a vegan diet that his girlfriend introduced him to. Personally, I cannot see myself doing a vegan diet, but it works for him. We talked about the new album, Doyle II: As We Die, and what was different about that record, compared to the first one, Abominator. When I asked him how he hooked up with Doyle frontman Alex “Wolfman” Story, he explained he put out ads in the papers, and Wolfman sent him a CD of songs from his other band, Cancerslug. Doyle loved what he heard and the rest is history. Between him and Wolfman, he says Wolfman is the bigger goofball.

We could not get into anything about the Misfits, but he just said it is another day at the office. We would go on to discuss his favorite place to play. We both agree that while the metal scene is good in the U.S., Europe and Japan have some intense metal fandom. Some of the other things we talked about are his world tour and where it will take the band the rest of the year. I even asked him what he likes to work on the most when he works out. He even travels with own gym, Arnold Schwarzenegger style.

He was a soft spoken gentleman who likes to let his guitar do the talking. I was humbled and honored to speak with the metal legend. I even told him that he is an inspiration to the workout world as well as the punk/metal community. They will be touring the U.S. again toward the end of the year. I hope he swings by again because I told him I would love to hit the gym with him. To Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, I salute you. Horns up!!!
